Cusco and Sacred Valley: This period covers the end of the dry season (May to September) and the start of the rainy season (October to November). May to September is generally dry with clear skies, ideal for visiting Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley. Daytime temperatures can range from 17°C (63°F) to 22°C (72°F), but nights can be cold, especially in higher altitudes.

What to Pack: Sun protection for daytime, layers for varying temperatures, and a warm jacket for cold nights and early mornings. Sturdy walking or hiking shoes for exploring ruins and the countryside. Starting in October, pack waterproof clothing or a rain jacket for the rainy season.

PREPARING FOR ALTITUDE

Cusco sits at an elevation of around 3,400 meters (11,152 feet) in the heart of the Andes Mountains, while Machu Picchu is located at about 2,430 meters (7,972 feet) above sea level. Due to these high elevations, some individuals might experience altitude sickness, characterized by symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, nausea, dizziness, and swelling. These symptoms typically lessen or disappear within the first 48 hours. To reduce the likelihood of altitude sickness, staying well-hydrated and consuming light meals are recommended strategies. Additionally, over-the-counter medications can help mitigate symptoms, and local traditional remedies, such as coca tea, are popular and readily available for relief.

CURRENCY AND PAYMENTS

Brazil: Brazilian Real (BRL). Credit cards are widely accepted, but cash is needed for small vendors.

Argentina: Argentine Peso (ARS). Credit cards are accepted but cash transactions are more common.

Peru: Peruvian Sol (PEN). Credit cards are accepted in cities, but cash is preferred in remote areas.

Consider informing your bank of your travel plans to avoid any issues with transactions abroad.

Brazil: Uses 127V or 220V, depending on the region. Power sockets are of type N, though you may occasionally encounter type C.

Argentina: Standard voltage is 220V, with type I power sockets.

Consider bringing a power strip along with a Universal Travel Adapter that can accommodate types A, C, I, and N. Additionally, carrying a portable battery pack for charging phones and tablets can be very useful during long days of sightseeing.
